Collection Opening: J. Dewey Daane Personal Papers

The Kennedy Library is pleased to announce the opening of the J. Dewey Daane Personal Papers.

The collection spans the years of 1931-1974 and contains a wide range of personal and professional papers relating to his work at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Deputy Under Secretary of the Treasury for Monetary Affairs during the Kennedy Administration and as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System under appointment by President Kennedy. Special topics include Daane’s work on international monetary policy, balance of payments, financing, bank lending, discount rates, U.S. foreign currency holdings, interest rates, and international liquidity.

J. Dewey Daane was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on July 6, 1918. He completed an undergraduate degree at Duke University in 1939, and was a Littauer Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Public Administration receiving both his Master’s (1946) and Doctoral degrees (1949) in Public Administration. 

Daane was referred to as an international monetary expert and had a lengthy and distinguished career in government and public service. He worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond from 1939 until 1960 when he joined the Department of Treasury as the Assistant to the Secretary for Debt Management (1960-1961) and then as the Deputy Under Secretary for Monetary Affairs (1962-1963.) On November 29, 1963 Daane became a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System under appointment by President Kennedy.

After his work with the federal government, Daane went on to become Vanderbilt University’s Frank. K. Houston’s Professor of Finance (1974.) He served in many other roles, such as vice chairman of the board of Sovran Bank, and advisor to the U.S. Congressional Budget Office, public director of the Chicago Board of Trade (1979-1982), public director of the National Futures Association (1987-2002) and as a director of the Whittaker Corporation (1974-1989.) 

J. Dewey Daane died on January 3, 2017 in Nashville, Tennessee at age 98. 

The collection is arranged into five series: Series 1. Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, 1931-1968, contains speeches, memoranda, correspondence, articles and publications generated during his various positions and activities during his tenure at the Bank. Series 2. Department of the Treasury, 1960-1965 documents Daane’s time as the Deputy Undersecretary of the Treasury for Monetary Affairs and contains subject files, drafts, reports and memoranda. Series 3. Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, 1952-1974 contains writings, correspondence, memoranda, reports, meeting and travel files related to Daane’s appointment to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System with files relating to the numerous federal and monetary organizations he was involved with. Series 4. Organizations, 1943-1974 contains subject files on both personal and professional organizations that Daane was associated with, and Series 5. Personal, 1948-1973 contains personal correspondence and subject files maintained by Daane over the course of his professional career.
